[laɪ], Robert, Politiker, * Niederbreidenbach (heute zu Nümbrecht) 15. 2. 1890, ✝ Nürnberg 26. 10. 1945; Chemiker, seit 1923 Mitglied der NSDAP, seit 1925 deren Gauleiter im Rheinland, wurde 1928 Mitglied des Landtags (Preußen), 1930 auch Mitglied des Reichstags. 1931-34 war er Reichsinspekteur und Stellvertreter des Reichsorganisators G. Strasser, de facto seit November 1932 dessen Nachfolger. In Hitlers Auftrag beseitigte er ab 2. 5. 1933 gewaltsam die freien Gewerkschaften und betrieb deren Gleichschaltung in der Deutschen Arbeitsfront (DAF; größte NS-Massenorganisation), die er bis 1945 leitete (ebenso deren Unterorganisation KdF). Außerdem war er Gründer von Ordensburgen. - Im Mai 1945 verhaftet, entzog er sich dem Verfahren vor dem Internationalen Militärtribunal Nürnberg durch Selbstmord.
